Is MBF the same as MBM?

Yes in practice. MBM means thousand (feet) board measure and is used interchangeably with MBF in most North American lumber trade.

Should I enter nominal size (2×4) or actual size (1.5×3.5)?

Match the supplier. Dimensional softwood is often quoted by nominal size; hardwood is usually priced by actual thickness and width. When unsure, ask.

Is lineal feet the same as linear feet?

How do you convert MBF to linear feet?

Worked example

1 MBF of 2×4 → 1,000 × 12 ÷ (2 × 4) = 1,500 LF. 2 MBF of 1×6 → 4,000 LF; same 2 MBF as 2×6 → 2,000 LF. Same volume, different length when the board size changes.

Which dimensions should you enter?

Why isn't the result an invoice tally?

Softwood and hardwood yards may apply product standards, surface measure, or their own rounding. Use this for planning; confirm the tally on the quote.

What about rough vs surfaced lumber?

Rough stock may be tallied at a standard thickness; surfaced stock may be measured under a different rule. Width, length, and invoice rounding can also differ from an unrounded geometric result.

Why can the same 1 MBF produce two lengths?

The job: A “2×4” may mean nominal tally size or a board measured at its surfaced size. You check both before trusting a quote.

What you get: Nominal: 1,500 LF. Actual measured: about 2,285.71 LF.
Why that number: A thinner, narrower cross-section holds less volume per foot — so the same 1 MBF stretches farther in length.
What to do next: Pick the result that matches the supplier's quote basis. A bigger LF number is not automatically the “right” one.

What mistakes throw MBF → LF off?

Three mix-ups that commonly inflate or shrink the answer.

Reading M as million instead of thousand

In lumber, M is Roman 1,000 — so MBF is a thousand board feet, and MMBF is a million. Mix them up and you're off by 1,000×.

Using nominal size when the supplier uses actual size

Some yards price a 2×4 by nominal size; others use actual (about 1.5×3.5). Ask which dimensions they use before you convert.

Mixing up $/MBF and $/BF

$600/MBF is $0.60 per board foot — not $600. Divide $/MBF by 1,000 before you compare with per-board-foot retail.
